Your life stories will be a cherished gift for generations to come! You’ve probably thought about doing this for years, but just haven’t gotten around to it. Where do you even start? We’ll help! Register for our upcoming classes to get you on track for becoming the best gift-giver ever.

Writing Your Family History or Memoir (LLA 0238), Tuesdays, 7-9 p.m., 10/10-11/14: You have stories. Your family has stories. Some are humorous; some are inspiring; and one or two may just be tall tales. Now is the time to record these stories to pass down to future generations. You may even want to publish a book. Learn techniques to interview family and friends, making them comfortable to share their tales. Self-reflection and writing exercises will help you write your own recollections in full detail. Once all the stories are collected, you will learn how to organize the writing process and create your personal masterpiece.

Legacy: Writing Your Life’s Story (LLA 0239), Thursdays, 7-9 p.m., 10/26-12/7: Create a legacy for your family by writing the stories of your life. You may even consider publishing your memoir to share with the world. As inspiration, we’ll read stories by published authors and previous legacy students. In-class exercises and weekly assignments will get you started writing short stories about different times in your life. Learn self-reflection and writing techniques to create intriguing vignettes. By sharing your writings in class, you’ll help others recall memories and you’ll receive useful feedback on your writing.

LLI (55+) Courses:

Our new Writing & Genealogy Series (LLI 0125), Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m., 9/21-11/24 will walk you through the steps to make it easy and enjoyable to create and share your story. While you can take each course individually, the series saves you money and guides you smoothly from research to writing to video.

Start with Researching Your Family History (LLI 0125), Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m, 9/21-10/12. Discover how to trace your roots with genealogy lecturer and author Stephen Szabados. Learn the most effective tools and processes to document and share your heritage…maybe you’ll even discover a royal ancestor or two.

Continue with Legacy: Write Your Memoir (LLI 0126), Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m., 10/19-11/9. Writing instructor and published author Laura Ehrke will guide you through fun writing and self-reflection exercises. Learn how to recapture long forgotten memories and write them into interesting vignettes to share…and possibly publish.

Finish with My City-My Story (LLI 0127), Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m., 11/16-11/24. Chicago writer/actor Paul Barile will help you develop a personal story that reflects your hometown’s history through your personal experience. Learn story-telling tips to present and record your stories on video to share with family, friends…and the world.
