bruche-noel-and-portWant to add a French touch to your holiday table? How about a bûche de noël?

CE French Language Instructor Chantal Rainey shares the origin of this decadent dessert:

The idea derives from a folk holiday celebration where a log, large enough to burn for three days, is ceremoniously placed on the fire. In France, in particular, a certain romantic image of peasant tradition had become part of the story. While the average Parisian bourgeois could hardly be expected to hoist logs to their fourth-floor apartments, they could at least show solidarity with their country cousins by picking up a more manageable bûche at the local patisserie. Bon appétit!
