GARDEN BENCH WORKSHOP (LLG 0006)

Celebrate the coming spring by enjoying the sights and sound of nature from the comfort of your own hand-made wooden bench. Popularized by the naturalist and writer of the same name, the Aldo Leopold bench provides rustic charm and comfort to any yard, garden, or deck. All materials and tools are provided and no woodworking experience necessary! Class meets at Spring Valley Nature Center (SVNS) in Schaumburg.
Saturday, 4/14, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Tuition $69 plus Fees $30

 

ELECTRICAL REPAIR (LHF 0131)

It’s shocking, but true. You can easily handle your own minor electrical repairs! If you do not want to pay an electrician hundreds of dollars, you can learn to safely test and replace light switches, outlets, light fixtures, and ceiling fans. Be trained in the basics of home electrical systems and how you can make informed decisions concerning repairs, purchases and maintenance. This presentation is taught by Ernie Hagenow, Jr., a licensed electrician and principal of Genuine Electric, a local contractor.

  Wednesday, 4/18, 6-9 p.m., Tuition: $79.

 

DIY: BICYCLE MAINTENANCE BASICS (LHF 0010)

This class will cover cleaning and lubing, basic eight-point inspection, flat repair, gear and brake adjustments, and wheel truing on and off bike. Bring your bicycle to class and get hands-on experience. Additional material will be handed out in class. Tools and all cleaning supplies are provided.

Saturday, 4/21, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuition: $49.

 

ILLINOIS HEIRLOOM GARDENING (LLG 0008)
Get ready for the new garden season by learning about organic plants and how to grow them in Illinois. This class will cover the basics of organic gardening, caring for your garden using natural remedies, and building good soil using compost. No previous garden experience necessary. All class participants will receive a coupon for five free plants from Spring Valley Native Plant and Heirloom Vegetable Sales. Class meets at Spring Valley Nature Center (SVNS) in Schaumburg.

Saturday, 5/19, 12-2 p.m., Tuition $69 plus Fees $25

 

BACKYARD COOKING (LFS 0505)

Dust off the grill and dig out the fire pit! Get ready to impress your friends and neighbors this barbeque season by testing out some new recipes and cooking skills. Participants will learn the ins and outs of cooking over an open fire using a cast iron Dutch oven while preparing a light meal and dessert. While the food simmers on the coals, put together a collection of fun and tasty recipes, and take the opportunity to chat with other backyard chefs. Class meets at Spring Valley Nature Center (SVNS) in Schaumburg.
