About our Writing Studio Instructors:

Lincoln Beauchamp is a renowned Blues artist, writer and publisher, as well as the co-founder of Chicago Blues Experience. In numerous Blues and Jazz recordings, Lincoln has collaborated with world-class artists including Pinetop Perkins, Memphis Slim, SunnyLand Slim, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Billy Cobham and Archie Shepp. He is the founding editor and publisher of Literati Chicago and the Original Chicago Blues Annual, which was translated into three languages. Lincoln’s extensive writing experience includes a wide range of books and articles, as well as being an in-demand contributor to a variety of publications. His lectures and performances take him around the world, including annual appearances at the April Jazz Festival in Espoo, Finland.

Laura Ehrke is a published novelist, blogger, marketing specialist and writing coach. Her education includes studying British literature and poetry at Oxford University, a bachelor’s degree in communications from DePaul University, fiction and nonfiction writing courses at Northwestern University’s Graduate School, and a master’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Chicago. As an author, Laura has been asked to speak at several events, including Comic-Con, Chicago Pop Culture Con, the University of Chicago Arts Panel, NaNoWriMo forums, and library programs. She brings her passion for writing into her courses, inspiring students to have fun while developing their creativity and writing skills.

Kate Tucker Fahlsing is a Chicago-based screenwriter/playwright, educator, and founder of WhizBang Writers Workshop. Kate holds an MFA in Writing for the Screen + Stage from Northwestern University and a BA in Literary Studies: Writing from Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts. Kate’s play, ACROSS THE PARK, premiered Off-Broadway at The American Theatre of Actors in October 2016 via The Araca Project and she is a semi-finalist for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference 2017. Kate is passionate about teaching the craft of dramatic storytelling and allowing people to give voice to their own stories, opinions, and visions.

Melissa Franic was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. Her life work includes finding ways for herself and others to connect to heritage and cultural identity through travel and storytelling. Melissa currently teaches writing courses and workshops throughout the Chicago area, most recently The Writer’s Playground as part of The Elgin Literary Festival. Previously, she worked as a journalist for various newspapers, including The West Chicago Press and The Naperville Sun. She is the co-founder of Neologian, a biannual literary journal featuring the work of emerging artists and writers from across the country. Her specialties include Technical Writing, English Composition, Creative Writing, and Literature.

Mike McCandless is a graduate of the Stanford University Professional Publishing Course and has held a variety of executive roles in publishing, marketing and sales. He is the founder of three publishing businesses, including the Touchwood Press, which produces e-book and soft cover titles using Amazon and other digital publishing services. A writer and editor himself, Mike brings his passion for the printed word to his classes. Several of his Publish It Yourself students have achieved their goal of publishing a book (or books), crediting the wealth of information and guidance they received in class.

Diane Piron-Gelman is a writer and editor with twenty years of experience in the publishing industry. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Theatre Arts from Lawrence University and a certificate (equivalent to an MFA) from the Drama Studio London at Berkeley. The author of three published mystery novels, which received several literary nominations and awards, Diane also writes shorts stories and is working on her fourth novel. In game publishing, she has written three sourcebooks of fictional history for BattleTech, a futuristic war game, published by FASA Corporation and its successor, Catalyst Game Labs. In addition to writing, she runs a company that provides professional editing services, records audiobooks and is an actress in Chicago’s professional non-Equity theatre scene.
