Strings Music Workshop (LMU 1180)

8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
This workshop is designed for adults and musicians ages 16+ playing violin, viola, cello and bass. The camp will consist of master-classes that are designed for adult musicians to learn through performance while under the guidance of Edgar Gabriel. The one-day workshop will cover styles ranging from classical and jazz as well as some fiddling and popular genres. The workshop will include a session about how to take care of your instrument and tips about maintenance of both acoustic and electric instrument.
Requirements: Open to students who play G, A, and Bb scales in two octave and D, E, and F in one octave. If you have questions about whether or not you feel that you’re qualified please feel free to contact Edgar Gabriel at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Schedule: 8 a.m.: Check-in, assess skill level and goals
9-9:45 a.m.: Opening/Welcome session
10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Master Class
- Fiddling techniques
- Bowing techniques
12:30-1:30 p.m.: Lunch (Student performance during lunch)
1:30-4:00 p.m.: Master Class
- Taking a solo – the basics of improvisation
- Developing a good ear
- Playing Rock or Pop
- Jumping into a group without a part
4:15-4:45 p.m.: Closing session
5-6 p.m.: Student Recital
About the Instructor: Acclaimed musician and Harper CE instructor Edgar Gabriel teaches violin and viola to adults and children in private lessons, group classes, and ensembles. He performs, composes and teaches styles including classical, jazz, fiddle, funk, rock and pop music. A classically trained violinist, Gabriel holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Northern Illinois University and a masters in jazz composition from DePaul University.
Gabriel has performed with many great artists, such as Andrea Bocelli, Ray Charles, Plant & Page, and Smokey Robinson. His ensemble work includes Cirque du Soleil, Steppenwolf Theatre and Chicago Opera Theater. Gabriel’s recording sessions include playing for Cheap Trick, Rachel Barton Pine, and the Plain White T’s. In 2005, Gabriel created StringFusion, a band that plays jazz infused with rock, funk, blues, classical, country and world music. Gabriel’s Tidings of Groove, a holiday album by StringFusion, features new and exciting versions of classic holiday songs, plus two original songs by Gabriel.
